Committee to Re-elect Fletcher Smith - SC http://www.fletchersmith2008.com/rss.xml DLCC en-us Sun May 25 2008 16:34:25 GMT-0400 (EDT) My Attendance Record http://dlcc.wiredforchange.com/o/5370/p/10021/blog?key=209
There has been some confusion recently regarding my attendance record at the State House. I want to dispell some of the rumors and misleading information that has come up and put the truth in the public domain.

Over the last 2 year legislative session, I have been in attendance at the state house 115 out of 123 days - an attendance record of over 93%. This record ensures that I am on hand to defend the interests of the district and promote public policy that is good for the people of South Carolina. The full record from my entire career can be found below. During 2004 and 2005, my attendance dropped slightly due to deaths in the family, but my record over the course of my career shows that I am on hand to represent the people of District 23 well.

Tue Apr 22 2008 21:10:14 GMT-0400 (EDT) Capitol Update on Healthcare http://dlcc.wiredforchange.com/o/5370/p/10021/blog?key=160
Healthcare is an important issue facing our state, and this week I, along with other House Democrats, have been working on two crucial healthcare issues that now face our legislature. The first is the Cigarette Tax, a measure that is now being extensively covered by the news media. The House has now passed the Cigarette Tax in a bill that will increase the tax on a pack of cigarettes by 50 cents. This bill is now being considered in the Senate. The new money that this tax generates will be used in three ways:

Fund a Smoking Prevention Fund

Increase Medicaid eligibility for low income families, children, and the aged, blind, and disabled

Increase health insurance coverage eligibility for low income individuals

The second initiative covers our state's critical nursing needs. South Carolina only trains about half the nurses it needs each year, and this new bill creates incentives for new nurses. New scholarships, increased nursing faculty pay, and more research money has been granted to help bolster our nursing ranks.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns regarding healthcare or other issues.
